Joe Henderson :: The Kicker
Joe Henderson's first recording for Milestone was very much a continuation of the adventurous acoustic music he had recorded previously for Blue Note. For those listeners who do not wish to invest in the tenor saxophonist's "complete" eight-CD Milestone box set, this single-CD is a good place to start in investigating his middle period music. Henderson is featured in a sextet with trumpeter Mike Lawrence, trombonist Grachan Moncur III, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Louis Hayes on a well-rounded set highlighted by "Mamacita," "Chelsea Bridge," "If," "Without a Song" and "Nardis."

Gary Burton Quartet :: Common Ground
Once Gary Burton retired from his duties at Berklee, he began to scale back his touring with a full-time quartet. In 2010, he assembled a new band with the phenomenal young guitarist Julian Lage (who first sat in with the vibraphonist at the age of 12), veteran bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Antonio Sanchez, all of whom have recorded as bandleaders themselves.

Barney Kessel :: Music to Listen to Barney Kessel By
Barney Kessel celebrated his domination of the 1956 magazine polls with one of the most challenging and unprecedented albums of his career, a twelve-tune recital where his guitar is surrounded by five woodwinds and a rhythm section playing his own crystalline scores. While the main focus is on the leader, such talented associates as Buddy Collette, André Previn, Jimmy Rowles, Red Mitchell, and Shelly Manne are also on hand to lend support. Among the many fine tune choices, two beautiful David Raksin compositions are given special treatment, as Kessel plays "Love Is for the Very Young" ("The Bad and the Beautiful") accompanied by the woodwinds only, and "Laura" as a duet with bassist Mitchell.

Bill Evans :: Everybody digs Bill Evans
Everybody Digs Bill Evans was a landmark recording for the young pianist and sported a unique album cover, featuring written-out endorsements from Miles Davis, George Shearing, Ahmad Jamal, and Cannonball Adderley. At a time approximate to when Evans was performing with the famous Kind of Blue band of Davis, Adderley, and John Coltrane, and actually departing the band, Evans continued to play the trio music he was ultimately best known for. With the unmatched pair of former Miles Davis drummer Philly Joe Jones and bassist Sam Jones (no relation), Evans was emerging not only as an ultra-sensitive player, but as an interpreter of standards second to none. The drummer is quite toned down to match the dynamics of the session, while the ever-reliable bassist lays back even more than usual, but at the expense of his soul.

Wes Montgomery :: Movin' Along
Because it was recorded between two of Wes Montgomery's best-known albums (Incredible Jazz Guitar and So Much Guitar), this particular CD is a bit underrated. The great guitarist is teamed with flutist James Clay (who switches to tenor on Wes' "So Do It!"), pianist Victor Feldman, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes for four standards (highlighted by Clifford Brown's "Sandu" and "Body and Soul"), Sam Jones' "Says You," and two Montgomery originals. The reissue also adds a pair of alternate takes to the fine program. Wes Montgomery made many of his finest jazz recordings originally for Riverside, and this is an often overlooked gem.
Wes Montgomery (g, b)
James Clay (fl, ts)
Victor Feldman (p)
Sam Jones (b)
Louis Hayes (dr)
Tracks:
1. Movin’ Along (Wes Montgomery)
2. Tune-up (Miles Davis)
3. I Don’t Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You (Crosby-Washington-Young)

5. Body and Soul (Heyman-Sour-Eyton-Green)

Grant Green :: Matador
The Allmusic review by Steve Huey awarded the album 5 stars and stated "it's a classic and easily one of Green's finest albums. In contrast to the soul-jazz and jazz-funk for which Green is chiefly remembered, Matador is a cool-toned, straight-ahead modal workout that features some of Green's most advanced improvisation... The group interplay is consistently strong, but really the spotlight falls chiefly on Green, whose crystal-clear articulation flourishes in this setting. And, for all of Matador's advanced musicality, it ends up being surprisingly accessible. This sound may not be Green's claim to fame, but Matador remains one of his greatest achievements".
1."Matador" – 10:51
2."My Favorite Things" (Oscar Hammerstein II, Richard Rodgers) – 10:23
3."Green Jeans" – 9:10
4."Bedouin" (Duke Pearson) – 11:41
5."Wives and Lovers" (Burt Bacharach, Hal David) – 9:01 Bonus track on CD reissue
Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on May 20 (tracks 1-4) & June 12 (track 5), 1964
